Seventeen firefighters were treated for heat-related injuries while fighting a vicious fire in Monroe Township on Tuesday, the Monroe County sheriff said.
One was hospitalized on a day that reached 85 degrees. The firefighter, whose name wasn’t released, was listed in stable condition.
The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Monroe County Fire Investigation Team, said the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
Members from eight fire departments responded to the blaze at a vacant building next to the Michigan College of Beauty on South Monroe Street, said Sheriff Troy Goodnough.
They arrived to find heavy black smoke coming from the building at 1:30 p.m., said Goodnough. They were responding to several 911 calls of smoke from the structure.
Responding to the fire were departments from Monroe city and Luna Pier, and the townships of Frenchtown, Bedford, Ida, Dundee, Erie and Summerfield.
Also responding were the American Red Cross, Monroe Community Ambulance and Lake Erie Transit.
