In this Humpday Hangout, Frank Ricci and P.J. Norwood speak with guest Kenneth R. Willette, executive director of the North American Fire Training Directors. They discuss the proposed “Emergency Response Standard,” through the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA.)
The stated goal that has been driven by the tragedy and tears of firefighters lost but fails to account for the operational realities of the fire service and the financial struggles of American communities. The Biden-Harris administration is pushing a sweeping new regulation aided by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) that sets a gold standard that doesn’t provide any gold.
It serves as an unfunded mandate that will cause more harm than good. The fire service needs to move in the direction of the proposed regulation in a commonsense way and we all agree on the need to reduce injury and death. The objection is in the process and the budget pressure this will place on municipalities and the volunteer departments that would be extinguished.
We also talk about recent rulings at the Supreme Court that may call into question the Constitutionality of the proposed regulation.
