Jul. 23—EDINBURGH — When downed trees and wires after Tuesday’s tornado meant that firefighters and emergency responders could not utilize a number of local roads to get to a fire that broke out near Sacandaga Lake, firefighters along with their gear and equipment traveled by boat to fight the fire Wednesday, July 17.

A fire destroyed a full-sized garage, two sheds and a large camper just off South Shore Road.

Fire Engineering: The Hidden Dangers of Garage Fires

“We had to do everything by boat,” said Edinburgh volunteer Fire Company Chief, Wayne Seelow. “We had to take personnel, hose and everything else by boat to get there because we couldn’t get there with the trucks.”

The fire occurred after Tuesday’s storm and tornado caused severe damage to a number of areas around Saratoga, Warren and Washington County. The storm downed trees, utility poles and wires making roads in the area impassable by vehicles. The cause of the fire is not being made public at this time Seelow said.

“It burned right to the ground, we did the best we could do,” Seelow said.

Chief Seelow said he was very thankful for the six fire companies which came to help put out the fire. In total, it took firefighters about four hours to put the fire out from the time they were able to get to the property.

“We had to load hoses up over the bank to get to Shore Road, and then we had to get everything up over another big bank to get to the garage,” Seelow said. “This is the first time we’ve ever had to transport everything by boat like this, to fight a fire.”

Municipalities in this area declared official State’s of Emergency in the hours after Tuesday’s storm. Cleanup and power restoration remains underway as of Friday afternoon in many of the nearby towns and villages
