Jul. 15—Rock Island’s Assistant Fire Chief Terry Smith is retiring after 28 years of service with the department.
Smith has been a member of the Rock Island Fire Department since 1996, and was promoted to assistant fire chief on January 23, 2023, according to a news release from the city.
“Throughout his career, Assistant Chief Smith has exemplified the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and commitment.” Fire Chief Bob Graff said in the release. “Assistant Chief Smith’s retirement marks the end of an era for our department, but his impact will be felt for many years to come.”
In his time with the department, Smith served as a lieutenant, captain and as battalion chief of the Third Battalion. As assistant fire chief, he served as the department’s training officer. He also supervised the buildings and grounds and assisted with the development of a strategic plan to maintain the fleet and facilities.
“Assistant Chief Smith’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of officers. We wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement and thank him for his 28 years of outstanding service,” Graff said.
His retirement is effective Wednesday, July 17, 2024.
The appointment of a new assistant fire chief is still pending, according to the city announcement.
