Jul. 9—NEW HAVEN — One person was taken to the hospital Monday afternoon after a boat exploded at City Point, authorities said.

Dan Coughlin, New Haven Fire Department’s assistance chief of operations, said crews responded to 100 South Water Street at pier 1 for a reported explosion. Upon arrival, he said, firefighters found a heavily damage boat tied to the dock.

Coughlin said the owner reported he was working on the motor at the time of the explosion. He said the bulk of fire was extinguished when firefighters arrived.

One person was transported with severe lacerations and second-degree burns, Coughlin said, adding that the man was in the burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital. He said the rescue company on-scene dealt with a flammable liquid leak into the water.

New Haven firefighters and personnel from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were called to the scene at around 6:10 p.m., a DEEP spokesperson said.

About 2 to 3 gallons of fuel spilled into the water during the incident, Van Ness said. The fuel leak was treated, and it was expected to dissipate within 24 hours, Van Ness said.

Van Ness said there was no further risk of fuel continuing to leak.
