Jul. 6—No more details have been released after a person was killed in a firework explosion on the Fourth of July in Hobbs.

The city of Hobbs said the fire department responded sometime Thursday to “a traumatic injury” in the 1300 block of West Sanger.

“Upon arrival, it was determined that the individual had sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of a firework explosion,” according to a news release.

The release said firefighters provided immediate medical attention at the scene before taking the person to Covenant Health Hospital.

“Despite the efforts of medical personnel, the individual tragically succumbed to their injuries,” according to the release. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the individual involved in last night’s tragic incident.”

The release did not identify the person killed or give any other details of how the incident happened.

Nobody could be reached at the fire department or fire marshal’s office for further details or comment on Saturday.

Within hours of announcing the death on Friday, the Hobbs Fire Department said it would be “patrolling the city limits to enforce the city ordinance regarding illegal fireworks.”

“To ensure everyone’s safety, please adhere to the regulations,” the department said on Facebook, noting that the city set up designated safe zones for fireworks.

One man commented that the fatal explosion had happened outside of the safe zones.
