Oneida, N.Y. — Chlorine gas built up Friday morning in the wastewater treatment facility in Oneida, Madison County, at levels five times over what is considered safe, firefighters said.
The Syracuse Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Response Team was called around 7:32 a.m. after equipment at the plant detected the leak in a room holding chlorine tanks, firefighters said in a news release.
Chlorine exposure at high concentrations can cause coughing, respiratory failure and blurred vision, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The hazmat team plugged the leak after about 30 minutes, firefighters said. The gas was contained to the room holding the tanks, they said.
The leak caused no danger to the public, according to firefighters.
Fans ventilated any remaining chemicals in the plant. It has resumed operations, firefighters said.
