Eight adults are homeless after a rapidly-moving blaze tore through a building in East Allen Township, a fire official said.

Township Fire Chief Josh Smith told lehighvalleylive.com flames just before 4:30 a.m. Sunday ignited at the building, occupying five apartments, near the Phillips Pet Supply Outlet. Responding crews reported flames visible upon arrival from the back and then quickly spreading throughout the second level.

Smith said all occupants got out safely on their own and all pets were accounted for. It took crews about four hours to get the flames under control, with firefighters battling from both the interior and exterior sections, Smith said.

The two-story structure sustained significant damage to the upper level. The building has since been deemed uninhabitable by fire officials. The American Red Cross PA Rivers Chapter is helping at least two tenants with shelter, Smith said.

It’s unclear what caused Sunday’s fire. It remains under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshals Office.
