Phoenix Crews Respond to Fire at New Housing Development

Phoenix (AZ) firefighters responded late Sunday to a fire that tore through a new housing development under construction.

According to the department’s social media accounts, more than 75 firefighters from seven different cities responded to the two-alarm fire on April 11, 2024, at the development near 59th Ave and Baseline Road. Firefighters worked to contain the flames in multiple homes while protecting exposures.

Crews operated defensively, employing a “big water” strategy to extinguish the fires. Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller told azfamily.com that firefighters faced water supply issues, as many hydrants in the new development were not connected to water.

No injuries were reported, the report noted.

According to FOX 10 news, at least 15 units under construction were destroyed.

The fire is among several large incidents seen over the course of the past year at developments under construction, including a February fire in Lexington, Kentucky, in the Masterson Station neighborhood that damaged five homes under construction; a January fire in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, that ravaged a luxury apartment building under construction; a December 2023 apartment fire in Aurora, Colorado, that burned for nearly a week; and a fire in the Las Vegas Valley last summer at an apartment and retail complex under construction by TRU Development Company, which a fire investigation recently ruled out as arson.
