Chief Joseph K. Tanner, BS, EFO, CFO, has served as the dedicated Fire Chief of Horry County Fire Rescue (SC) since December 2015. With over three decades of exemplary service in fire and emergency management, Chief Tanner brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the role. His tenure at Georgetown City Fire Department, where he also held the position of Fire Chief for 18 years, underscores a career deeply rooted in commitment to public safety and community service. His leadership has been integral in developing and implementing strategies that enhance the safety and preparedness of the communities he serves, always placing great emphasis on the critical nature of Community Risk Reduction initiatives and programs delivered by the department. Chief Tanner's dedication to the field of fire service and his impact on the community set a benchmark for excellence and inspire those around him. Chief Tanner was recently named as the recipient of the 2023 Fritz Turner Award as the “Top Fire Chief in South Carolina”, presented by the South Carolina State Association of Fire Chiefs.

Assistant Chief Mark Nugent, with his extensive background in the Fire Service, brings a wealth of knowledge to the "THE OUNCE OF PREVENTION" webinar. His illustrious career in public safety, marked by leadership roles at various levels of local government, showcases his expertise in Leadership, Crisis Management, Fire Administration, Emergency Medical Services, and Community Risk Reduction. Mark is not only academically accomplished, with an MPA focused on Emergency Services from Columbia Southern University and a Chief Fire Officer designation from CPSE, but he is also currently enriching his expertise through the Executive Fire Officer program at the National Fire Academy. Attendees will benefit from his rich experiences, including his time as Assistant to the Fire Chief at Horry County Fire/Rescue, his impactful work as Division Chief/Fire Marshal at Midway Fire Rescue, and his tenure managing Community Risk Reduction programs, recruitment, and retention at Horry County Fire Rescue.
