Firefighter, 20, Killed, Another Injured When Abingdon (VA) Apparatus Hits Utility Pole

One firefighter was killed and another sustained serious injuries when an Abingdon (VA) Fire Department vehicle crashed Thursday, wjhl.com reported.

The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. when the vehicle was responding to a fire alarm call, according to the Virginia State Police.

State police said the vehicle was traveling south on Vance’s Mill Road when it went off the right side of the road, hit a utility pole, and overturned down an embankment.

A passenger in the vehicle was killed and the driver suffered “serious, but non-life threatening” injuries, according to state police. The driver was taken to Bristol Regional Medical Center.

A 20-year-old firefighter was killed in the line of duty and another critically injured when an Abingdon Fire Department vehicle, reportedly, responding on a run, was involved in a rollover crash. Abington is in Virginia near the Tennessee line. The crash happened Thursday evening on Vances Mill Road. Our condolences to all those affected. Rest In Peace.
