TX Firefighters Respond to Row House Fire in Historic Neighborhood

According to a report from ABC13, Houston (TX) Fire Department (HFD) crews responded to a fire at a home in the Fourth Ward’s historic Freedmen’s Town neighborhood overnight.

HFD firefighters fought through extreme heat and humidity as they extinguished the flames on Gillette Street at Victor Street.

Officials said the HFD’s quick and aggressive attack contained the damage to the backyard of the home. Firefighters said the response was helped by the close proximity of their station to the scene as well as that there were no cars parked on the narrow street, and a fire hydrant was nearby.

An HFD district chief said they were concerned from the flames and large columns of smoke on approach. Crews eventually saw that a large tree was engulfed, which officials said can make things appear worse than they actually are.

No injuries have been reported, and structures suffered no major damage. One witness said the row houses were vacant because they were being remodeled.

Firefighters are still unsure what caused the fire.
