NY Solar Farm Fire Sends Potentially Harmful Smoke into Air

According to a report from CBS News, New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a health advisory for potentially harmful, toxic air Thursday night after a battery fire erupted at a solar farm in Lyme.

The fire started at around 1 p.m. in the Jefferson County town, near Lake Ontario, and about 20 miles from the Canadian border.

Residents within a one-mile radius of the facility were told to shelter in place. The order has since been lifted.

Multiple New York state agencies were sent to the area to assist local and county officials. The cause of the fire is unknown.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the United States has more than 5,000 solar farms spread across the country. In 2022, they produced 3.4% of the nation’s electricity.
