Mayday, Firefighter Dies in Leonardtown (MD) House Fire

Update, June 28, 2023: The fallen firefighter has been identified as Brice C. Trossbach, 25, of Naval Air Station Patuxent River.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, firefighters from the Naval Air Station Patuxent River responded to a mutual aid call at a residential fire located on Deer Wood Park Drive in Leonardtown, Maryland. Firefighter Brice C. Trossbach, while fighting the fire on the first floor, fell into the basement. He was rescued and immediately rushed to the hospital where he passed away from the injuries he sustained in the accident. Firefighter Trossbach was also a volunteer firefighter with the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department and the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department.

Original story, June 27, 2023: Multiple Maydays were declared and a firefighter was killed during a house fire Tuesday, June 27, 2023, in Leonardtown, Maryland, according to reports.

The fire occurred in the 20500 Blk of Deer Wood Park Dr in Leonardtown, St. Mary’s County, according to the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal.

7News’ Maryland Bureau Reporter Brad Bell reported that one firefighter was killed after falling through the first floor into the basement of the home.

According to smnewsnet.com, companies from Leonardtown, Hollywood, Bay District, NAS Patuxent River, Valley Lee, and Seventh District responded to the fire. A firefighter reportedly was trapped after falling through the floor, and firefighters worked to free the trapped member.

According to FOX 5, although the firefighter’s identity has yet to be released, he was a Defense Department civilian firefighter out of the Naval Air Station Patuxent River who was offering support to first responders at the scene.
