IMPROVING FIREFIGHTER COMMUNICATIONS

David Clark Company Series 9900 Wireless Headset Communication Systems dramatically enhance communications, helping firefighters gain a tactical advantage both en route and at the fireground or incident scene. Response time, situational awareness and safety are dramatically improved.

While en route, all firefighters in the apparatus – from the front seats to the rear jump seats – can clearly hear commands from dispatch and other mobile units, above the din of road noise, engines, and blaring sirens. Upon arrival at the scene, firefighters are already informed, prepared and ready to hit the ground running, while free to move about without being tethered to apparatus or other equipment. Pump operators are able to hear and communicate clearly even while loud engines are engaged. During aerial operations, platform operators are able to communicate clearly with personnel in the bucket without having to rely on often unintelligible ‘squawk boxes’. Incident commanders at the scene can also communicate instructions at normal voice levels, without shouting to be heard, dramatically reducing stress and the possibility of miscommunication.

Wireless System Overview

The David Clark Company Series 9900 Wireless Headset Communication System, based on the latest Digital Enhanced Cordless Communication (DECT) technology, provides clear, hands-free communication for firefighters with a range of 300 feet or more from the Wireless Gateway, which acts as a relay for all audio between Belt Stations and existing wired intercom systems. Communication is clear while secure signaling prevents unwanted interception. Additional system components include wireless belt stations, which transmit and receive all system audio, to and from the Gateway and the user’s headset. Noise-attenuating headsets are available in a variety of styles – both over-the-head and behind-the-head models for wearing under protective head gear. As with all David Clark communication headsets, Series 9900 wireless headsets provide rugged reliability and are designed to stand up to the harshest environments. Headsets also offer advanced comfort features, including soft foam head pads and undercut, comfort-gel ear seals, that provide outstanding comfort during long periods of use.

Hearing Protection

Firefighters are exposed to a variety of high noise sources en route and at the scene. These sources include loud sirens, air horns, road noise, fire apparatus engines, power tools and pumps, and the ambient noise on the fire ground. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) states that “hearing protection shall be provided and used by all members on a fire apparatus when subject to noise levels above 90 decibels (A-5.11.1) Firefighters are often exposed to noise as loud as 125 decibels caused by running apparatus, sirens and radios turned up to full volume. Bob Daigle, Systems Manager at David Clark Company, puts it this way, “Good hearing is obviously critical for firefighters. The need to hear radio transmissions, cries for assistance at the scene, and tactical commands on the fireground are extremely important. Our wireless headsets not only provide clear communication, but also much needed hearing protection to mitigate hearing loss, which is irreversible.”

A ’Thank You’ to Volunteers

The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) reports that 65% of firefighters in the United States are volunteers. Of the estimated 1,024, 200 across the country, 676,900 are volunteers. Many volunteer fire departments struggle to meet staffing needs and to find the funds for much needed protective equipment. In 2019, David Clark Company introduced its “Biannual Headset System Giveaway” promotion for volunteer fire departments. For the past three years, David Clark has awarded two departments per year with a free headset system on the apparatus of their choice. The promotion includes free system configuration based on the winning departments’ specific application needs, as well as free installation of the system on their apparatus. Details can be found on the company’s promotional website, www.dc-vfdgiveaway.com.

“While we are grateful for the efforts of all firefighters and first responders, this promotion is our small way of giving back to the thousands of volunteers that risk their lives for little or no compensation,” said Bob Daigle. “These brave men and women are asked to do so much, oftentimes with just the bare necessities in terms of equipment and resources.”

Proven Systems, Exceptional Service

With over four decades of experience providing firefighters, EMS professionals and other first responders, David Clark wired and wireless systems have proven their effectiveness for thousands of fire departments in the United States. All systems are backed by exceptional customer service and technical support. Our team of dedicated professionals are ready to provide installation configurations and application assistance that are tailored to various apparatus and application needs.

Bunker Boots Built for Battle

Top-Down Conviction, Foundational Design

When shoe-cobbler and firefighter Ewald Haimerl decided the fire boots worn by his Mainburg Fire Brigade colleagues were too uncomfortable and outdated, he put his master shoe-making skills to work. His two passions—making great shoes and firefighting—resulted in a multi-functional, all-leather fire boot that quickly became popular not only in Mainburg, but around the region. Ewald understood what makes a great fire boot. And because footwear is all we do, we can focus all our creativity, research and quality control on our bunker boots. Safe, comfortable, and thoughtful design are HAIX® hallmarks.

High Performance Innovation

When building a house, you can’t ensure a safe dwelling without a strong foundation. At HAIX®, we believe footwear is no different. Good footwear can reduce pain, foot-fatigue and long-term joint weakness. But what is “good” footwear? It starts with innovation.

We deliver industry-firsts in both of our bunker boot outsole production models. In 1992, Ewald Haimerl patented the MSL-System for injecting polyurethane foam into the cemented, or glued, sole. This layer of spray foam (again, think high-end house construction) means that you feel the cushion but don’t feel the elements. With no direct points of contact between the inner and outer soles, and therefore no thermal bridging, you experience the best insulation on the market. For the more athletic fit and a lighter boot, we fuse the entire outer sole to the footbed using a high heat, high pressure process. A special, hard-wearing Polyurethane is molded around the boot, eliminating the need for glue, resulting in an exceptionally strong sole adhesion.

At HAIX®, “common” doesn’t mean ordinary. Widely accepted as an upgrade over rubber, we took things a step further, using thicker and more durable Bullhide. Though thicker leather can mean less pliable out of the box, any firefighter knows the importance of a boot that maintains its shape. Sun-Reflect technology keeps the boot 20% cooler than our competitors in direct sunlight by adding special reflective elements during the tanning process—the same leather high-end German car manufacturers use on their seats. A GORE-TEX® CROSSTECH® lining makes our boots waterproof and chemical hazard splash resistant, so your feet stay safe, cool, and dry. Moisture wicking insoles chase sweat into puncture resistant inner soles, perfectly complementing our unique Climate System. Added foam in the boot shaft acts as a ventilation system when in motion.

Find What Fits You

When someone says they are a firefighter, most of us can conjure up an image of turnout coats, helmets, and firehoses. However, there is a vast difference in gear and training when responding to a subdivision housefire and a fifth-floor walkup apartment in a densely populated city. We know many jobs within the fire industry have unique demands that require specialized features.

The Fire Hero Xtreme has a sole designed with suction-cup action, providing exceptional traction on wet surfaces. This boot also offers a raised arch for better stability on ladder rungs and a cemented sole with polyurethane foam injection for added insulation from heat and cold.

The Fire Hunter Xtreme is the boot that many veterans of the profession trust. It is the service boot with the fit and comfort of a lace boot. Ankle flexion is woven into the design, for added maneuverability while remaining a sturdy, rugged boot.

For those transitioning to leather from rubber, we offer the Fire Hunter USA. With all the trusted comfort, safety and quality found in every HAIX® bunker boot, the Fire Hunter USA is a great introduction to our family of footwear.

Fire Eagle Air meets the needs of urban and vertical firefighting. Got to climb four sets of stairs, scale up a steep ladder, run the hose around a city block? The flex action in the leather, combined with a lightweight, athletic running sole make this boot ideal for the athletic firefighter.

The Next Evolution

What do you get when you combine over 30 years of fire boot-making experience and a refusal to settle when it comes to protecting Firefighters? The Fire Eagle Xtreme. Our most advanced and innovative boot to date, the Fire Eagle Xtreme reimagines traditional bunker boots. Complete with all the features of other HAIX® bunker boots, the Fire Eagle Xtreme pairs an athletic outsole with another industry first—RapidFit lacing. Our goal was to individualize the fit and anchor the foot without sacrificing time. Firefighter footwear will never be the same.

HALE PRODUCTS | LEADERS IN SAFETY

Hale Products is committed to offering the highest level of service and performance for rescue personnel and fire truck manufacturers. Consisting of three brands – Hale, Class 1 and Godiva, Hale Products is a leader in fire suppression pumps, plumbing, valves, foam, CAFS, electronic, gauges and ES-key multiplexing systems. Founded in 1914, Hale Products remains a leader in firefighter safety and reliability.

Hale Products has always prided itself on providing an extensive product line of fire pumps and lifesaving equipment for firefighters. During the 1980s, Hale made two key acquisitions: Hurst and Godiva. Hurst, the developer of the famed Jaws of Life®, gave Hale Products its first entry into the rescue market. In 1984, Hale acquired Godiva, located in Warwick, England. One of the leading fire pump manufacturers outside the U.S., Godiva’s focus on portable, high-pressure and rear-mounted pumps made an immediate impact on Hale’s mission to support firefighters.

In 1914, most fire departments relied on steam-powered water pumps to combat fires. Three Pennsylvania firefighters – Alan C. Hale, E.J. Wendell and C.H. Young, Jr. – believed they could make a better fire pump, and they formed Hale Fire Pump, known today as Hale Products. They built the first Hale fire pump using improved gasoline engine technology, and christened the new pump the Young Giant. During the next century, Hale Products would continue to be a leader in reliability, performance and innovation.

In May 1994, Hale Products was acquired by IDEX Corporation, located in Northbrook, IL. A diverse corporation with large national and international markets in fluid-handling, dispensing and industrial machinery, IDEX was a natural partner for Hale. Formed in 1988, IDEX has grown to a publicly traded company with sales in excess of $2.1 billion each year. Throughout its ownership, IDEX has supported Hale Products’ tactical vision for growth through the acquisition of key fire and rescue manufacturers. Since its acquisition, Hale Products has expanded into a full-spectrum solution for fire and rescue crews around the world.

HURST JAWS OF LIFE® EXTENDS LIVES

HURST Jaws of Life®, a business unit of IDEX Fire & Safety, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the revolutionary Jaws of Life brand in 2022. Innovation is at the heart of everything we do. The history of HURST Jaws of Life rescue tools began when George Hurst, the manufacturer of Hurst shifters and a racing enthusiast, devised a prototype tool to extricate auto racers from high-speed wrecks. In 1972, less than a year later, the HURST Power Tool debuted to the public with production of the model JL-32, which soon was helping first responders extricate everyday drivers from roadside accidents. It gained popularity among firefighters, emergency technicians and law enforcement, and it was soon monikered and then trademarked as the Jaws of Life. Since then, we haven’t stopped innovating. Our commitment to research and development, along with quality manufacturing, has resulted in a line of products known for their outstanding safety, durability and performance. Because of this commitment, HURST Jaws of Life® is the most trusted brand in the industry, and our rescue systems have been instrumental in saving hundreds of thousands of lives throughout those 50 years.

HURST products travel with more than 35,000 rescue squads and fire and police departments throughout the world. Our company has the strongest network of distributors in the industry with extensive coverage throughout the United States, Canada, Latin America and the rest of the world. These distribution partners provide excellent sales, service and training to fire and rescue departments, emergency services, military installations and government agencies across North America and beyond. And thanks to IDEX, our parent company, we’ve made connections with fire and safety groups worldwide. Founded in 1988 with three small, entrepreneurial manufacturing companies, we’re proud to say that we now call 40 diverse businesses around the world part of the IDEX family. With 7,000 employees and manufacturing operations in more than 20 countries, IDEX is a high-performing, global $2+ billion company committed to making trusted solutions that improve lives.

HURST Jaws of Life has expanded the rescue tool portfolio to also include cutters, combination tools, rescue rams and accessories to help first responders stay safe at the scene. Today’s tools are smaller and lightweight, and they can cut, spread, lift and breach metal, wood and rebar on vehicles and structures to allow first responders to get to entrapped people and save their lives.

Over the years, our company has continually raised the bar on rescue tool power and performance. It introduced the industry’s first battery-powered extrication tool line, eDRAULIC®,

in 2010, allowing first responders tool operation unencumbered by hoses and generators. It next invented StrongArm®, a battery-powered multitool that fits easily in the trunk of a law enforcement vehicle and operates quietly enough for SWAT team use. In 2019, HURST Jaws of Life launched eDRAULIC Watertight Extrication Tool (EWXT), the first battery-operated tool line to operate completely submerged in fresh water. In 2021, HURST Jaws of Life debuted eDRAULIC 3.0, a revolutionary extrication tool line offering turbo power, a smart dashboard and fresh and saltwater compatibility.

About HURST Jaws of Life

HURST is the only manufacturer of the Jaws of Life® brand. There is no equal to saving lives. The company’s commitment to research and development and dedication to quality engineering and manufacturing has resulted in a line of innovative products known for outstanding safety, durability and performance. HURST Jaws of Life Inc. is a unit of IDEX Corporation, an applied solutions company. For more information about HURST Jaws of Life, visit www.jawsoflife.com.

At Pierce Manufacturing, fire trucks are built to live up to the demands of firefighters and the communities they serve. Behind every highly customized, carefully-designed and engineered pumper, aerial, tanker and rescue unit is a team of professionals whose mission is to build a truck, exactly how it’s ordered. To Pierce, every step of the process is personal; from innovation and expertise, to customization and service.

As a single-source manufacturer with over one million square feet of state-of-the-art production space, there’s a reason you’ll find more than 27,000 Pierce trucks on the road today. Facilities are ISO-9001 certified, showing the company’s dedication to meet world-class standards for quality.

Proven Technology

Pierce is continually evolving to provide firefighters with industry-leading advancements and unmatched innovation. As a subsidiary of Oshkosh Corporation, the experienced team has access to an arsenal of cutting-edge technologies and revolutionary processes that have contributed to the development of four custom chassis and best-in-class innovations.

  • Pierce Volterra™ Electric Pumper: Introduced in June 2021, the Volterra pumper is the first electric fire truck in service in North America. Designed around Oshkosh proprietary and patented technology, the electric fire truck consists of a patented parallel-electric drive train featuring an electro-mechanical infinitely variable transmission which allows zero-emissions operation when powered by the integrated onboard batteries, and can be coupled to the internal combustion engine to provide continuous and uninterrupted power to the pumping system or drive system.
  • Ascendant® Class of Aerials: The Ascendant technology has expanded into six innovative products brilliantly engineered to equip firefighters with more aerial choices than ever before. Whether it be height or weight restrictions, compartment space, preference to ride rather than climb or rescue capabilities, the Ascendant technology provides flexibility and a wide range of options to meet departments’ needs.
  • Command Zone™: Cutting edge electronic system that makes it easier for firefighters to maintain their vehicles, prepare for calls and monitor performance on the scene. It also delivers the industry’s first prognostic capabilities.
  • Idle Reduction Technology: Incorporating high-performance lithium-ion batteries, main chassis engine auto-start, and full Command Zone™ integration, Pierce’s Idle Reduction Technology allows the apparatus to be on scene with zero air and noise pollution while maintaining mission-critical on-scene loads.
  • Foam Systems: Pierce’s integrated foam systems help firefighters perform beyond the capabilities of water alone. Whether it’s Pierce’s innovative Husky™ foam system or the Hercules™ compressed air foam system, these systems are designed to improve the fire-extinguishing capabilities of water, enhance on-scene efficiencies and promote water use reduction.
  • Pierce Ultimate Configuration (PUC™): An innovative apparatus solution designed to simplify firefighters’ actions and reduce unnecessary risk. The PUC eliminates the traditional pump house, is easier to operate, maximizes compartment space and simplifies service, while offering flow capabilities of up to 2000 gallons per minute.
  • TAK-4® Independent Suspension: Independent Front Suspension (IFS), stops faster, corners better, improves handling, offers better ride quality and is far more maneuverable than any straight-axle truck on the road. Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) operates like IFS but provides power to the wheels. With the ability to add TAK-٤ T٣, the ١٠٠٪ mechanical steering system further improves control and mobility.

Customer Support

Pierce’s dealer network is the strongest in the fire industry and is always there to listen to what’s needed, provide guidance and offer support. Fire departments count on the Pierce Service Brigade, a coast-to-coast network of more than 600 factory-trained technicians, to ensure the right service is done at the right time. It’s only fair. Firefighters pour everything they’ve got into fighting fires. The Pierce team pours everything they’ve got into making sure a fire truck is ready to perform.

Experience

With more than 100 years of manufacturing experience, Pierce’s unwavering commitment to quality is not just a promise. It’s ingrained into who they are. Employees, from the assembly team to the unmatched dealer network, are driven to serve firefighters. Why? Because many Pierce team members are firefighters themselves.

Community

Commitment to performance extends beyond Pierce’s factory walls and into the communities served. A significant part of the Pierce legacy involves giving back to the community and the fire industry through contributions and events like the annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb event that takes place on the steps of Lambeau Field, in Green Bay, Wisconsin. All funds raised benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

The Pierce team doesn’t think of building fire trucks as just another job. That’s evident every time you walk through a Pierce facility and have a conversation with the people who build these rigs. Visit Pierce before you settle on your next apparatus.

BAUER RFIDPro™

The RFIDPro™ data logging system allows the fire department to seamlessly log every SCBA fill event for convenience and accuracy. SCBA cylinders are scanned through the wireless BAUER RFIDPro™ reader, and if the cylinder is current (hydro test is current and the cylinder was not previously tagged out or end of life), the system guides the operator through cylinder inspection and filling. The system ensures the customer won’t be caught off guard with alerts that notify the user when an SCBA cylinder needs to be hydro tested or when it has reached its expiration date. Best of all, this data logging is NFPA 1989 compliant.

UNICUS® 4i UPDATES

We have introduced a number of updates to our UNICUS® 4i all-in-one compressor and filling stations. These improvements include replacing the manual fill valves with indicator lights to alert the operator when SCBA filling is complete, creating a manual cascade bypass option, and offering an auto-cascade capable of handling 7000 PSIG service.

The Best Wildland Face Mask Anywhere!

Hot Shield masks were developed by two firefighters after experiencing the California Firestorms of 1993 were not willing to continue using cotton bandanna as the only option for face & lung protection when SCBA was required for structure fires. Over 29 years later, some firefighters mistakenly believe a cotton bandanna is their only option for wildland firefighting, but a Hot Shield mask far exceeds anything else available anywhere. Hot Shield masks are the only wildland masks that can withstand the direct flames of a blowtorch. Hot Shield Masks are designed by firefighters specifically for wildland firefighting, We make different models because firefighters want choices. Every mask is constructed of multiple layers of CarbonX brand fabrics, the most inherently non-flammable fabric in the world. Hot Shield masks provide significant & unsurpassed radiant heat & flame protection. CarbonX fabrics are third party tested to achieve an astonishing RPP rating of 11 cal/cm2 and a TPP rating of 10 cal/cm2 (single layer). Hot Shield makes several different models as every person prefers a different level of protection. Our masks are hand or machine washable and are extremely durable. The RollNRack Hose Management System

WORK SMARTER, SAFER & GET THE JOB DONE FASTER

A hose related back injury led Firefighter/Founder Javier Fernandez to design and patent tools that would prevent back injuries for all firefighters. Since back injuries are the number one cause of early duty disability retirement across the US, his goal was to exceed NFPA safety standards throughout the process and eliminate the potential for injuries during hose management. This system prevents loading hose while riding precariously on top of moving apparatus. The dangerous and antiquated practice has led to injuries and deaths.

• ROLLNRACK Tools cover:

• Firefighter Life Safety Initiative #1

• Exceed NFPA 1500 Safety Standards

• Highlighted in IFSTA’s Essentials 7

• Qualify for all Safety Grant Apps

• Prevent riding on rigs to load hose (load LDH with two firefighters)

• ALL hose (up to 7.25”) handled ergonomically

• 100’ of LDH Drained & Rolled in under 30 seconds

• The Efficiency Package saves budget dollars and cuts scene time in half

“The goal was to improve a firefighter’s quality of life by working smarter, more efficiently and being as safe as possible. Heavy rolls of LDH are rocked into or out of the units and loaded onto stationary rigs. No one rides on moving apparatus to load hose, ever.” Fernandez states.

The customizable system is portable and fully independent of the apparatus. With shrinking budgets, higher workman’s comp insurance, an aging work force, the current shortages in the volunteer ranks and expanding coverage, THE ROLLNRACK SYSTEM makes a difference. Videos show how they can help any department or company. “It’s the safest system on the market and has streamlined hose management for volunteer, career, industrial and military firefighters all over the world.” The ROLLNRACK SYSTEM is MADE IN THE USA and demonstrated at all shows attended.

Whether a department is building a new apparatus or laying out a single compartment, Zico is prepared with solutions specific to their needs.

Ziamatic proudly introduces the following new products –

Multiple Extrication Tool Holder, Model QM-MEH-1

Make more efficient use of available compartment space by securing up to four extrication tools in the space of one. This easy-to-use “Lazy Susan” rotating platform accommodates most cutters, spreaders, and combination tools with an option for one or more rams. To operate, simply raise the center knob and rotate the turntable to access the tool you need. The turntable locks into place after each 90-degree rotation for quick and safe tool retrieval.

SURE-GRIP Tool Mount, Model SG-VM-1

A revolutionary new way to secure 3/4” to 1-3/4” diameter tools, the SURE-GRIP utilizes a time-tested, all-weather hook & loop strap to provide more surface area and a more precise grip on every tool, regardless of handle shape. Operation is simple—just unfasten the strap and pull the tool free, quick and easy. A fixed support arm provides added assistance and stability during operation, and the smaller overall dimensions allow you to fit more tools in the same space.
