More Than 100 KY Firefighters Respond to Vacant Warehouse Fire

According to a report from WHAS11, investigations are continuing into the cause of a massive fire erupted in a 60,000-square-foot vacant warehouse in the Smoketown neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, around 4:30 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Louisville Fire Department Battalion Chief Bobby Cooper said more than 100 firefighters responded to the four-story warehouse at the intersection of Caldwell and Jackson Streets around 4:30 p.m. Monday. It took crews three hours to bring the fire under control.

Passerby Mark Bramwel said the flames were reaching up to 20 feet in height, and other witnesses said the fire was visible from the southern part of Indiana.

Cooper said crews were initially going to fight the fire from the interior, but they were evacuated from the fire’s fast progression. He also said part of the building collapsed during the incident.

Nina Moseley, chief operations officer at Wayside Christian Mission, the owner of the building, said the warehouse was used to store furniture and other materials. She also said there were reports of intruders inside the warehouse in the days leading up to the fire. Officials said those reports are now part of their investigation, which is ongoing.

No injuries have been reported. Cooper said the scene is still active and asks the public to avoid traveling through the area.
