Firefighters with the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department rescued a 10-month-old child from a residential fire today.
On Friday, February 24, 2023, Indianapolis crews responded to a working double residence fire with entrapment at 511 N. Hamilton Ave. Units were dispatched at 1:01 p.m. with multiple calls to 911 reporting the fire. Crews arrived on scene at 1:04 p.m. to find a two-story, ordinary construction structure with heavy fire and smoke showing from the first floor.
Firefighters made an aggressive interior attack and had water on the fire at 1:05 p.m. Engine 11 members located the 10-month-old victim in an upstairs bedroom at 1:10 p.m. The child was immediately given CPR and transported in critical condition to an area medical facility. Neighbors had helped other residents escape earlier. Two dogs died in the fire.
Civilian Rescue: The Reason We Exist
The fire was under control at 1:23 p.m. One firefighter sustained a slight injury and was transported. The fire originated on the first floor in the living room but the cause has not been determined.
