NJ Firefighters Respond to Major Fires in West New York, Union City

Firefighters operated early Wednesday at a fire that burned multiple businesses in the town of West New York, New Jersey, and then were faced with another fire not far away in Union City.

The fire affected multiple buildings along Bergenline Avenue, according to News12, but there were no reported injuries. Fire Engineering correspondent Tony Greco indicated that there were two fires burning in the area, and former PIO Justin Derevyanik confirmed via social media that there was a second fire in the vicinity. NJ.com reported that the second fire was in Union City.

According to Hudson County View, the initial fire began around 4:30 a.m. at 6117 Bergenline Ave., a commercial area that has a nail salon, ice cream store, barbecue restaurant, and electronics repair shop.

Fire photographer Ron Jeffers reported that the first fire struck a row of commercial buildings with various stores. A backdraft reportedly occurred in the rear of the structures, but a roll call indicated all firefighters were accounted for.

According to Jeffers, the second fire occurred in the 1000 block of Bergenline in a row of mixed occupancy structures. Crews encountered heavy fire and collapses on scene. Mutual aid answered a first alarm with a recall engine from North Hudson Regional. Other support came from Secaucus and as far away as Belleville, Bloomfield, and Montclair in Essex County. Jersey City and Bayonne units also later showed up to the scene.
