According to a report from USA Today, former NFL Tight End and Long Beach (CA) Fire Department Firefighter Gavin Escobar was one of two people who were found dead in an apparent rock climbing incident in a remote area near Idyllwild, California, on Wednesday.
The Riverside County sheriff’s coroner’s office identified the victims as Escobar, 31, and Chelsea Walsh, 33, both of Huntington Beach.
Escobar played for the Dallas Cowboys from 2013 to 2016. The 6’5″, 247-pound tight end caught 30 passes and eight touchdowns in his career.
CAL Fire said the climbing accident involving the victims was reported at around 12 p.m. Wednesday near Tahquitz Rock in the San Bernardino National Forest.
Firefighters hiking to the spot discovered both victims deceased.
Officials indicated that both victims were killed while climbing a “rock face,” but gave no other details. It is not known if either were seasoned or amateur climbers.
