According to a report from CBS5, three members of Dallas (TX) Fire-Rescue (DFR) were injured fighting a house fire early Thursday that was later determined to have been set by the homeowner with a cigarette.
Three DFR firefighters suffered burn injuries and were transported to Parkland Hospital for treatment. DFR Public Information Officer Jason Evans said two firefighters were admitted, but one was treated and released. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.
DFR crews received the call to the home in the 2200 block of Mail Avenue, near Dallas Love Field, right after 12 a.m. Evans said the occupant of the home, a woman, escaped to safety, but firefighters became overwhelmed by extreme heat on entry.
The conditions forced a retreat, but one of the firefighters became disoriented, resulting in the Mayday call, which can be heard below.
Evans said the firefighters managed to self-extricate, with help from additional on-scene firefighters, and the Mayday was canceled.
Evans said after investigators determined the cause of the fire, the homeowner admitted to starting the fire and was arrested and taken to Lew Sterrett Justice Center.
