Volusia County (FL) Fire Rescue conducted a three-day interactive hazmat training at Country Pure Foods in DeLand, Florida. The planning and execution of the hands-on training were completed by Battalion Chief Steven Huber and Lieutenant Michael Sypian from Station 15, the Fire Rescue Training Center in Daytona Beach, Florida.
The firefighters participated in a simulated rapid extrication of a victim from the first-due engine, an anhydrous ammonia leak with mitigation, and then a down entry team member with Response to Intervention strategies. Also, at the end of day two, the training featured a white powder call.
The participants included members from Volusia County Fire Rescue, Daytona Beach Shores, City of DeLand, and Orange City Fire Departments. Hazmat is an area that covers the operations of both hazard and hazmat for the exposure of chemical, explosive, or biological incidents. Training must be conducted regularly to enhance awareness of materials, follow operational guidelines, and review tactics.
