According to a report from ABC7, a fire broke out at early Wednesday morning at a Citibank branch in Chicago, Illinois’s, The Loop at the Cook County office building at 69 W. Washington Street, which is also home to several Cook County government offices.
According to Chicago Fire Department (CFD) officials, the fire began at around 2:30 a.m. in the lobby. Building employees working overnight had to shelter in place and and were later evacuated by fire personnel.
Although flames were visible from the exterior, they looked to be mostly contained to the ground floor.
This building was also the scene of a deadly fire that occurred nearly 20 years ago. Confusion during that fire’s evacuation resulted in CFD policy changes; new strategies; and new equipment use such as high-rise rescue first, if necessary.
All people inside were evacuated. One person was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital because of a non-life-threatening “medical emergency.”
The fire’s cause is under investigation.
