Two Firefighters Injured in Three-Alarm Bayonne (NJ) Fire

Firefighters responded yesterday to a structure fire in Bayonne, New Jersey, that went to three alarms and sent two members to the hospital, according to a report from the fire chief.

At 3:38 p.m. on May 26, 2021, Bayonne (NJ) Fire Department was dispatched to a report of fire at 126 West 27th Street. Arriving units found heavy fire conditions at the address with fire extending to adjacent buildings. Crews employed multiple handlines and brought the fire under control in an hour.

Two firefighters suffered injuries and were transported, treated, and released. One occupant was treated on scene, and firefighters rescued two cats from the fire, one of which was treated for smoke inhalation and released to the owner.

“The quick action of our firefighters, along with mutual aid from the Jersey City (NJ) Fire Department (JCFD), stopped a large and aggressive fire from extending to nearby structures that were just feet apart,” Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver said in his statement. “Their training and experience proved to be decisive in controlling this blaze quickly. I want to thank our firefighters for a job well done and also thank JCFD, McCabe EMS, Bayonne Police Department, and the Bayonne Fire Canteen for their assistance today.”

A total of 13 occupants were displaced, the report said, and are under the care of the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management and the New Jersey Red Cross. The fire is under investigation.
