According to a report from KING5, Seattle (WA) Fire Department (SFD) crews battled a massive vacant structure fire mid-afternoon on Wednesday on Aurora Avenue North.
The SFD reported the fire at North 109th Street and Aurora Avenue North at around 12:40 p.m. when they noticed black smoke while they were driving through the neighborhood.
The fire was upgraded to two alarms to increase the response. Approximately 80 percent of the roof had burned through, causing structural instability.
According to the SFD’s Fireline blog, crews applied water on the fire from above with three ladder pipe streams and multiple handlines from the street level. Given the advanced stage of the fire, it was too dangerous to send firefighters inside the building, so they continued to apply water from the exterior. The owner of the property stated there were multiple vehicles inside of the metal-framed structure and some propane tanks, which resulted in small explosions throughout the incident.
There were no reported injuries.
Firefighters took a defensive stance and doused the fire with three ladder pipes and hand lines, fire officials said. Two buildings near the structure sustained minimal smoke and fire damage.
At least one SFD crew stayed on scene through Wednesday evening to make sure the fire doesn’t reignite.
The were no reported injuries to any firefighters, and fire investigators are currently investigating the cause, but none has yet been found.
