NY Firefighter Dies While Attempting Rescue

Firefighter fatality

The U.S. Fire Administration released its notice on the death of a Spring Valley (NY) firefighter who was killed while attempting to rescue residents of an assisted care facility.

On Tuesday, March 23, 2021, Firefighter Jared Lloyd, 35, responded to a fire at the Evergreen Court Home for Adults, an assisted living facility.  He rushed into the burning building to save residents, but the fire’s intensity grew and he also became trapped.

He sent out a Mayday call and fellow firefighters tried to pull him out, but heavy flames and smoke prevented them from reaching him. For hours after the fire was under control, firefighters scoured the rubble for Firefighter Lloyd. His body was found nearly 24 hours after he became trapped.

The fire also killed a male resident.

“Jared Lloyd gave his life in service to others. He searched as the building burned determined to rescue anyone who may have been trapped,” Rockland County Executive Ed Day told reporters at a news conference. “His loss is devastating. There is no other way to put it. But I will tell you this: his loss and his heroism will never be forgotten.”

As reported by the Associated Press, Firefighter Lloyd was the father of two boys: Darius, 5, and Logan, who turned 6 Wednesday. Rockland firefighters staged a rally with fire apparatus to support the boy, as reported in the New York Post.
