A child has passed away after being injured in a recent fire in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
Public Information Officer Lindsey Rogers notes that one of the victims of a fire the department responded to on E. 36th Street earlier this month. The victim is a three-year-old child.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this very difficult time. This is a loss for his loved ones, the community and our department,” said Chattanooga (TN) Fire Chief Phil Hyman.
The child, his two siblings, and his father were taken to the hospital after flames tore through their home on Thursday, September 5. The fire appears to have started in the front of the house, Rogers noted in a report.
Two adults in a downstairs apartment got out safely. The family living upstairs escaped with the help of police officers and other Good Samaritans, but the three-year-old boy was trapped in a back bedroom.
Firefighters acted fast and they did an initial search and fire suppression looking for the boy. They located him and brought him out, but he succumbed to his injuries.
“We commend the actions of everyone involved in fighting to save this young child, both at the scene and at the hospital. Sincere condolences to his loved ones,” Chief Hyman added.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
