With smoke inhalation the major cause of fire-related deaths annually in the United States, new studies are under way to determine the toxicity of combustible synthetic materials used in building materials.
Laboratory tests conducted by ASTM, a private standards organization, could help determine a specification for inhalation toxicity of combustible products.
