We are entering the busy season for fire schools, seminars and conferences, and fire departments will be represented at these training and educational events by one to a handful of members.

We commend all those who make the effort to learn how to do their job more effectively and with greater safety.

However, it is not enough that a relatively small number of fire fighters and officers become better trained. The knowledge that they gain needs to be spread among the other members of their departments.

Chiefs of departments should maintain a department policy to give those who have attended schools and seminars opportunities to pass along their added knowledge to others. It might mean reproducing a report on a seminar and sending a copy to each company—or in some cases each member or the department or each officer. Those who received special training could be temporarily assigned to train others in their department.

The effort is minimal and the benefits to the entire department are enormous.
