APPARATUS DELIVERIES

BY JOHN M. MALECKY

The Nenana (AK) Fire Department operates a tanker and mini-pumper built by FORT GARRY INDUSTRIES. Mayor Jason Mayrand, also a firefighter, says the area has few paved roads, no hydrants except in town, and remote areas that are hard to access. The jurisdiction’s rough terrain also requires a short wheelbase and high angles of approach and departure. This shelf tanker was modified with four-wheel-drive, a larger water tank, and a commercial chassis with a single axle for more mobility. The mini-pumper performs forest fire response and structural quick attack.

Features/Equipment (tanker):
INTERNATIONAL 7400 4 × 4 chassis with 216-inch wheelbase and three-seat cab; INTERNATIONAL DT 570 330-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 3000 EVS automatic transmission and pump-and-roll capability; DARLEY HM single-stage, 500-gpm pump with two 1 3/4-inch crosslays; FGI 2,000-gallon water tank with 10-inch NEWTON dump valve; FGI roll-up compartment doors; and FGI portable tank bracket with 1,500-gallon FOL-DA-TANK.

Features/Equipment (mini-pumper):

  • FORD F-550 XL 4 × 4 chassis with 165-inch wheelbase and two-seat cab;
  • FORD 6.0L 325-hp, Power Stroke diesel engine with five-speed standard transmission and pump-and-roll capability;
  • DARLEY HM single-stage, 500-gpm pump with HYPRO Foam Pro 1600 system, underhood 140-cfm CAFS compressor, and two 1 1/2-inch crosslays;
  • WELLINGTON PLASTICS 500-gallon water and 25-gallon foam tanks; and
  • WARN six-ton front-mounted winch.

    The Bartlett (TX) Fire Department protects a mostly rural district. According to Chief Duane Kurtin, this AMERICAN LAFRANCE unit is equipped with foam and can respond as a primary pumper or tanker for rural structure and wildland fires.

    Features/Equipment:

    • FREIGHTLINER M2 112 chassis with 275-inch wheelbase and four-seat cab;
    • MERCEDES BENZ MB 4000 410-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 4000 EVS automatic transmission;

    • 2,300 gallon FOL-DA-TANK on a ZIAMATIC hydraulic lift; and
    • light and power with ONAN eight-kw hydraulic generator, WILL BURT Night Scan, and two FRC floodlights behind cab.

    The Glidden (WI) Fire Department uses its MARION rescue truck to respond to fires, MVAs, and other first responder calls. Assistant Chief John Prankratz says the department wanted a small vehicle for maneuverability in the rural area with narrow roads and a walk-in body for rehab needs.

    Features/Equipment:

    • FORD F-550 chassis with 165-inch wheelbase and two-seat cab;
    • FORD Power Stroke diesel engine with automatic transmission;
    • 12-foot walk-in body with three-seats;

    The Park City (UT) Fire Department uses this E-ONE Teleboom to provide an aerial stream in a mostly residential and light industrial area, according to Battalion Chief Steve Zwirn. The midmount design allows for a full hosebed. The unit complements a 100-foot aerial and 65-foot Telesqurt.

    Features/Equipment:

    The Orange (NJ) Fire Department specified its ROSENBAUER pumper with an aerial ladder to complement the department’s ladder truck, according to Deputy Chief Ben DeMarzo. The city once had two ladder companies; now it has one. The unit adds flexibility; the ladder can also be used for mass decon.
