Apparatus Deliveries

The Fairbanks (AK) Fire Department designed this SVI TRUCKS heavy rescue vehicle to focus on current and future growth, says Battalion Chief Brian C. Davis. The truck is the only “true” heavy rescue within 350 square miles and provides mutual aid to nine fire departments. It is designed to operate from between -50°F to + 90°F. It responds to fires, motor vehicle accidents, water rescues, trapped persons, industrial rescues, and many technical rescues. The truck can also respond as a service company if both of the department’s aerials happen to out of service.

Features/Equipment:

  • SPARTAN Gladiator LFD chassis with 202-inch wheelbase and 20-inch raised roof cab with four seats;
  • CUMMINS ISL 9 450-hp diesel engine with an ALLISON 3000 EVS automatic transmission;
  • the front bumper has two compartments with accessories for a 8¼-ton center mount winch;
  • 18-foot, four-inch nonwalk-in body with a rear recessed center stairway, four upper body compartments, three wheel well sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders, and ROM roll-up compartment doors;
  • separate SCBA storage module for seven cylinders;
  • LIBERATOR 3200 Series crane with wireless remote at top of body for use with a J.P. MARINE Patrol Series 15 inflatable boat, which has a 20-hp HONDA outboard motor;
  • JENNY electric-powered air pump;
  • FROST FIGHTER clean air heater (which operates off of the vehicle fuel tank) to warm trapped victims during extrication;
  • HURST hydraulic simo unit;
  • SAFETY VISION rear camera system;
  • ZOLL AED;
  • eight HANNAY reels (four for rescue tools and two each low-pressure air and electric cords); and
  • light and power with an ONAN Protec 35-kw pto driven generator, COMMAND LIGHT nine-kw tower with back light, and eight FRC flood/scene lights (one brow, one tripod stored in compartment, two rear, and four on sides).

The Shohola (PA) Fire Department replaced a full-size pumper with this mini pumper built by SPARTAN ERV. Captain Joshua Mugan says the older pumper had a maneuverability problem because of its wheelbase and length, which became a hindrance on the hilly terrain and tighter roads within the response area. Although the department maintains another full-size pumper, this mini adds to the department’s abilities for tight turns and low clearance, and it has 4 × 4 capabilities.

Features/Equipment:

  • FORD F-550 4 × 4 with a 186-inch wheelbase, severe-duty front bumper, and two-seat extended cab;
  • a storage configuration was added replacing rear seats in the cab extension for SCBA and EMS equipment;
  • FORD 6.7L Power Stroke 300-hp diesel engine with six-speed automatic transmission;
  • HALE DSD single-stage, 1,250-gpm pump with a Foamlogix 2.1A foam system, SPARTAN ERV Rapid CAFS, 200 CFM, two two-inch crosslays, one 2½-inch rear discharge (also foam capable), and an AKRON Apollo deck gun;
  • SPARTAN ERV poly 300-gallon water and 20-gallon foam tanks;
  • ROM roll-up compartment doors; and
  • lighting with two WHELEN midship telescoping floodlights and two rear scene lights.

The Marlboro Township Volunteer Fire Company, Alliance, Ohio, uses this KME pumper as a first-out engine and as a secondary unit for scene lighting and rescue operations, says Committee Chairman Dave Ferrebee. The department specified a mid-mount pump over a top-mount pump to keep the vehicle shorter and the engineer more safely on the ground rather than have him move up and down. The pump is behind a roll-up door in a heated housing. A camera monitors the exterior rear and right side. The closed compartment keeps the hose retained and clean.

Features/Equipment:

  • Predator Panther 100-inch MFD chassis with 200-inch wheelbase and 10-inch raised roof cab with six seats;
  • CUMMINS ISL 9 450-hp diesel engine with ALLISON 3000 EVS automatic transmission;
  • ROM roll-up compartment doors;
  • Split-low hosebed for LDH and high hosebeds for 1¾-, 2½-, and three-inch hose;
  • HALE Qmax single-stage, 1,750-gpm pump with FOAM PRO 1601 Class A system, six-inch front intake, a three-inch front preconnect with an AKRON Mercury portable monitor, and four crosslays (two foam-capable 1¾-inch, one foam-capable 2½-inch, and one 2½-inch for water);
  • 11 sleeves for spare SCBA cylinders and hand extinguishers;
  • VOYAGER camera system with dual monitors;
  • PHYSIO CONTROL AED; and
  • light and power with a SMART POWER 10-kw pto generator, COMMAND LIGHT, six WHELEN scene lights (left, right, and rear on body), and an AKRON electric cord reel.
