  • U.S. FIRE PUMP‘s new High Velocity Pump (HVP), placed on board a Ferrara industrial pumper dubbed the “Inundator Super Pumper,” set the Guinness Book World Record for “Highest Pumping Capacity Fire Engine.” The HVP helped Ferrara Fire Apparatus reach close to 5,500 gallons per minute (gpm) from draft and 10,000+ gpm from a pressurized source. The water flow distance measured during a recent field test was 500+ feet horizontal reach and 400+ feet vertical reach.   • TARGETSOLUTIONS announced 36 new emergency medical services (EMS) courses approved for credit by the Continuing Education Coordinating Board for Emergency Medical Services (CECBEMS). The courses have been added to TargetSolutions’ online training catalog for CECBEMS, which now features 159 hours of approved continuing education for all levels of EMS personnel. In the past, only a portion of TargetSolutions’ EMS online continuing education was approved for CECBEMS credit.   • The NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION (NFPA) awarded its inaugural Philip J. DiNenno Prize as well as $50,000 in prize money to Lyman Blackwell, who co-developed the affordable home smoke alarm with the late Duane Pearsall. The DiNenno Prize recognizes important innovations that have had a significant impact on public safety, including building, fire, and electrical safety. It is named after the late Philip J. DiNenno for his exceptional contributions to fire safety.   • CUMMINS INC. announced two new environmental sustainability goals for its products in use and the logistics of the company’s managed freight. Cummins is pledging that by 2020 it will reach an annual reduction of 3.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2), or 350 million gallons of fuel. The company expects to reach 20 percent of its customers, cumulatively saving them 1.6 billion gallons of fuel, $6 billon, and more than 15 million metric tons of CO2. Cummins is also pledging to reduce CO2 per kilogram of goods moved by 10 percent by 2020 by adopting a global transportation management system to improve the speed and efficiency of goods moved and to improve end-to-end visibility to manage the process. http://www.cummins.com
