Annual Index a Key to Fire Engineering’s Success

From the Publishers Desk

Apparatus, building construction, communications, hazardous materials, pumps, fire reports, respiratory protection, volunteers, training, tools and equipment, are all grist for the mill that is called Fire Engineering. We had this thought as we thumbed through our annual index for 1979.

There are more categories, of course. Actually our index contains some 400 items that have appeared in Fire Engineering in the past 12 months. These are major editorial items—smaller items were just too numerous to mention. But small or large, these categories cover the full range of subjects that apply to the fire service and establish the reason why Fire Engineering has been called the bible of the fire service going back for 103 years. The index also provides the reason why Fire Engineering readers hold on to their back issues—some going back 30 to 40 years and we don’t actually know who has the record.

One of the reasons why we can have such a large and varied index is the traveling that our editors do, some 42,000 miles in the past year. They have attended all the major conferences this year and some 38 minor ones. It is the only way we can keep our fingers on the pulse of the fire service and report what is happening in the service to our readers. We learned a long time ago that satisfied readers make satisfied advertisers.

So, on this note we sign off our final column for the year 1979 by extending from all our staff the heartiest good wishes for the holiday season and a happy and prosperous New Year for all our friends.
