Joint Council Endorses Fire Administration Funding

The Joint Council of National Fire Service Organizations has emphasized its support of continued funding of the National Fire Administration by approving a resolution at a special meeting. The resolution is intended to end any doubts about where the Joint Council stands.

The resolution states, “The Joint Council remains dedicated to the principles espoused in the federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974 and until such time that the Council is provided the opportunity to review in detail any proposed reorganization to assure that these principles are reinforced, stands by its resolution in support of continued funding of USFA.”

In addition to supporting the USFA, the Joint Council also approved a resolution deploring a Federal Aviation Administration proposal to eliminate the requirements for crash-fire-rescue capabilities at smaller airports and, specifically, commuter airports.

The Joint Council resolution pointed out that at these smaller airports, the removal of the FAA requirements would result in the lowering or total removal of CFR capability.

The New York Fire Department is preparing to train its first women fire fighters. The 52 women who passed a revised physical agility test are scheduled to undergo six weeks of recruit training. The Uniformed Firefighters Association is protesting the revised test in court and a group of men who failed the original test are arguing that they should be allowed to take the same test the women recently passed.

Commissioner Charles I Hynes commented, “I’m in favor of anyone who can pass the rigorous six weeks of probation school becoming a fire fighter.”

Bob Burns, who wrote about the fire that destroyed much of the Allied Chemical plant in Philadelphia (July Fire Engineering, page 20), tells us that Allied will rebuild That will save 385 jobs that have been in limbo since the March 9 fire at the plant, which produces phenol and acetone.
