During a fire incident, the Towanda, PA, Fire Department relies primarily on the Susquehanna River for its water supply. In fact, the downtown business district (a high hazard area made up of three- and four-story brick buildings built during the 1800s) is adjacent to the river.

To better meet the needs of its district, the Towanda Fire Department replaced a 1965 engine with this new 2,000-gpm pumper from Sutphen Corp. In service at the Naiad Linta Fire Company No. 2, the new apparatus is equipped with a Hale single-stage pump and a five-inch large diameter hose supplied by Snap-Tlte to get water from the river into the town. The department is also able to lay into the fire with one five-inch line, eliminating the need for having a pumper positioned at the hydrant, explained Fire Chief David W. Brubaker.

The engine, powered by a Detroit Diesel 8V71TA, also has two 2-inch pre-connected attack lines and two 2 1/2-inch pre-connected lines; the apparatus also carries 400 feet of 2 1/2-inch hose. Its tank capacity is 750 gallons.

An Emergency One heavy rescue unit has been placed in service for the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). The institution, which is most often referred to as Univeristy Hospital, is located in Newark, NJ. They received the truck in June 1985.

The truck body is mounted on a Ford Model C 8000 tilt cab chassis with a 111-inch wheelbase and has a 32,760 pound gvw (gross vehicle weight). It is powered by a Cat Model 3208 T diesel engine with an Allison Model MT 643, 4-speed automatic transmission. The apparatus body is all aluminum.

The unit is manned with a crew of two EMTs. A response is usually augmented by a supervisor in his assigned vehicle. The truck was not designed for ambulance transport capability.

The unit works in cooperation with the fire and police departments along with their rescue units.
