This FMC Roughneck combination pumper and tanker has been in use by the Cleveland, TN, Fire Department for about one year. One of its features is the jump seats, which hold six men and make it safer then the department’s previous truck. On their old apparatus, the men were riding on the tailboards. This new pumper also has the convenience of high-side compartments to hold the self-contained breathing apparatus.

The pumper is mounted on a Ford C model tilt cab chassis. It is powered by a Caterpillar 225-hp diesel engine and Ford five-speed manual transmission. It has a Hale twostage, 1,000-gpm pump and a 750-gallon water tank.

There is a remote speaker and microphone inside the high compartment next to the pump panel for the operator’s use.

The Mt. Vernon, NY, Fire Department has accepted delivery of two Emergency One pumpers. This is the first time the department has pumpers in service with operating controls mounted behind the cab in the transverse position.

The units, which were put into service in early June, pump 1,250 gpm and have a tank capacity of 500 gallons. They also have portable foam eductors that can be used with 1-inch and 1/2-inch lines.

The pumpers’ deck guns are mounted by crossways pump controls and can be activated by the pump operator. There is also a swivel connection on the bumper for a soft sleeve hydrant connection.

The trucks seat three men in the front and two under the canopy, where air packs are readily available.

The units are mounted on a Ford C-800 tilt cab and are powered by a Cat 3208 T diesel engine and Allison MT643 automatic transmission.

Company 5 of the Watertown, CT, Fire Department accepted delivery of this FMC pumper in mid-July. It replaces a 1965 Mack pumper.

According to Chief Avery W. Lamphier, the pumper’s short (160-inch) wheelbase gives the unit much maneuverability. This short turning radius is a big advantage when working in industrial buildings and populated areas.

The wide open cab, which seats four men, is another highlight of the pumper. Not only is it a safety feature, but it allows four men to be mounted and equipped with their SCBAs when they arrive on the scene.

There are two floodlights that work off the alternator on the apparatus, which greatly assist in lighting up the fire scene, according to Chief Lamphier.

The pumper is built on a PemFab chassis with an 8V92TA Detroit diesel engine and 475 hp. It has an Allison automatic HT 740 transmission. It is the department’s first 1,500gpm pumper and has a tank capacity of 750 gallons.

In addition to this new truck, the department also has six 1,250-gpm pumpers, two aerial units, and two emergency units.
