The IJIS Institute awarded its 2016 Innovation Award to Intel, Mutualink and the San Mateo County Sheriff’s for “The Internet of Public Safety Things: Urban Shield Results.” This exciting area of emerging public safety technology is transforming the ways that first responder teams interoperate to accomplish their missions.

The IJIS Institute Innovation Award recognizes technical innovation that has contributed significantly to the advancement of integration and interoperability in a justice, public safety, or homeland security project.
The Internet of Public Safety Things emerged last fall with the unveiling of Mutualink’s Wearable Smart Gateway (WSG), powered by the tiny and ultra-low power Intel(r) EdisonTM chip. The WSG is the world’s first wearable communications gateway that enables first responders to share multimedia information with command posts and other public safety agencies in real time over secure networks. It serves as a secure connection to sensors and devices that are worn, held or nearby, and is the first in a suite of wearable and non-wearable products being developed for public safety.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office successfully tested the WSG during Urban Shield 2015. The technology provided users with unprecedented real-time dynamic information sharing and situational awareness, as well as the ability to monitor the health and well-being of team members throughout the exercises.
