  • The NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION’s (NFPA’s) Fire Sprinkler Initiative and the HOME FIRE SPRINKLER COALITION (HFSC) awarded Clarendon Hills (IL) Fire Department Chief Brian Leahy with the 2015 Bringing Safety Home Award. The award recognizes fire service members and other safety advocates who use HFSC’s educational materials and Fire Sprinkler Initiative resources to ensure that decision makers have accurate information as new or updated home fire sprinkler codes are considered. In 2000, Leahy met with his elected officials to educate them on the benefits of home fire sprinklers. With limited resources, Leahy’s efforts resulted in the passage of an ordinance requiring fire sprinklers in all new one- and two-family homes. Today, more than 700 Clarendon Hills homes are protected with fire sprinklers. www.nfpa.org.
  • The FIREMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK (FASNY) has produced “Firefighters Fighting Cancer,” a video that highlights the stories of six cancer survivors from across New York State’s fire service. All six firefighters were seemingly healthy when they received their respective cancer diagnoses; their illnesses were likely caused by their work as volunteer firefighters. New York State legislation sponsored by State Senator Michael Nozzolio and Assembly member Aileen Gunther would provide presumptive cancer coverage to New York’s 92,000 volunteer firefighters. The bill would cover several types of cancers presumed to be linked to firefighting, ensuring that no firefighter diagnosed with cancer would be left looking for help.
