Griphoist

The GRIPHOIST is a hand-operated, manual portable hoist using wire rope for heavy-duty work. The GRIPHOIST can be operated in vertical, horizontal, or even diagonal positions. It is used in industry to lift, pull, or transfer loads from one position to another. The GRIPHOIST is a piece of equipment which is durable and can perform many duties. In the fire service, the GRIPHOIST is used to lift a load, stabilize a load, and move a load from one location to another.

The working principle of the GRIPHOIST is based on the two pairs of grip jaws: These pairs of grip-jaws work like two hands alternately seizing the wire rope to pull it for lifting, and retain it during lowering. The two pair of grip-jaws is locked by the pull of the wire rope. A point to remember when using the GRIPHOIST is the heavier the load, the stronger the grip.

Prior to placing the GRIPHOIST into operation, there are several steps one must take for safety reasons:

• Prior to the operation, make sure the GRIPHOIST will be able to perform the operation without causing injury to any personnel, and without causing any damage to the equipment. DO NOT EXCEED the rated capacity of the machine.
• If the pull is very difficult, stop the operation and inspect the wire rope. Make sure the desired piece of equipment is suitable for the operation.
• Make sure there is nothing impeding the free movement of the wire rope and the working mechanism of the GRIPHOIST.

The GRIPHOIST will require an anchor to work. The anchor pin, or hook end, of the wire rope is used. Using a sling, attach it to the hook end and apply it to a substantial object. Make sure the desired sling is rated for the load for which it is intended to be used on. Furthermore, the anchor sling must be in direct line to the operation. For a pulling operation, the GRIPHOIST is anchored to substantial object to where the load is being pulled. When lifting a load, the GRIPHOIST should be position directly above the object being lifted – this will maximize the lift.

The GRIPHOIST is fitted with a safety feature to prevent overloading: The power stroke lever is connected to the crankshaft by one or more shear pins depending upon the model being used. The power stroke level is equipped with shear pins: These shear pins are an overload, protective safety device, and they are designed to shear-off in case of overloading; the pins’ diameter and composition are the characteristics that shear-off. It can be anywhere from 50 – 100% depending on the working conditions. The reason to have these shear pins is to protect the equipment from costly damage and to prevent injury. If a pin shears, the only movement is in the reverse mode.

The wire rope used with the GRIPHOIST is designed specifically for that unit. The wire rope should be inspected prior to, during, and after the operation. The wire rope must placed out-of-service if any of the following exist:

• Broken wires or strands
• Kinking, crushing, corrosion, or any other defects exists
• Heat damage which is evident through wire discoloration
• Wire rope expose to temperatures exceeding 212 degrees
• Reduction of the wire rope nominal diameter by 10 %

Other things of importance pertaining to the wire rope:

1) Never bend the wire rope over sharp edges; It must only pass over pulleys of proper diameter.
2) It is impossible to release the clutch while the GRIPHOIST is under a load exceeding 220 lbs.
3) Periodically clean the wire rope with oil using 10W-40 weight oil.
