Several people were forced to jump from a Columbus (OH) apartment complex fire that sent 10 people to the hospital Tuesday.
WBNS reported that the fire occurred in a 42-unit apartment building, and that the fire spread very rapidly. Many residents felt they had no choice but to jump.
Among the victims was a baby, whom firefighters said would be okay.
Good Samaritans reportedly assisted victims exiting the building. Some victims ended up jumping from the second and third floors of the complex.
“As I was running up towards the building, people were breaking out the windows to help the people jump out of the building,” said rescuer Marcella Rodriguez told reporters.
Fire officials ultimately ruled the fire accidental, having stared in a hallway of the structure.
Officials say the building had no firewall which allowed the fire to spread from unit to unit. Some residents say they heard smoke detectors, but others said they heard nothing.
