APPARATUS DELIVERIES

In New Jersey, the Camden Fire Department has in service two pumpers and two Telesqurts designed to be maneuverable in the small streets and equipped to deliver large volumes of water—a necessity with some of the mill-type construction within the town’s boundaries, according to Deputy Chief Francis K. Stinger.

The 50-foot Telesqurt is a new type of apparatus to Camden — which for the past 14 years had been using a 54-foot articulated Squrt. The apparatus are built by American La France on Pemfab Model T-964 chassis with four-door cabs. The cabs’ middle windows are outfitted with a metal screen to protect the jumpseat firefighters from flying objects. The Squrts have 170-inch wheelbases, giving them a short turning radius; and the two pumpers have 150-inch wheelbases, affording an even shorter turning radius and resulting in a body slightly shorter than the cab. The cabs each seat five. The apparatus are powered by Detroit Model 6V92, 350-hp diesel engines with Allison Model HT-740 automatic transmissions.

All units have Hale, QSMG, 1,750-gpm, single-stage pumps and carry 500 gallons of water. There is a preconnected five-inch gated front intake; two 200-foot, 1 ⅛-inch attack lines in crosslays; one 100foot, T/Vinch rear “Quick Line”; and one 150-foot, 2‘/i-inch rear “Blitz Line.”

The Telesqurts have two three-inch valves feeding a 1,000-gpm nozzle on the tms: the pumpers have deck guns with 2,000-gpm nozzles and four-inch valves. The four vehicles have bodies with six tool and equipment compartments and a diamond-plated broom trough mounted above the left side horizontal compartments. They each earn 1,000 feet of four-inch hose and have two 500-watt KwikRaze quartz floodlights on poles and one 500-watt Churchville fltxxllight on an electric reel. (Photo by John M. Maleckv.)

In Hawaii, Maui County is somewhat unique in that it comprises three islands. Its population of about 100,000 (tourists included) is served by 12 stations (eight on Maui, three on Molokai, and one on Lanai). The rescue truck (housed at the Icahului station) was designed for haz-mat incidents as well as heavy’ rescue. The rear cab features a Macintosh computer with CAMEO capabilities.

The truck, built by Marion Body Works, has a 14-foot aluminum body with nine tool and equipment compartments. A 7.5-kw Onan diesel generator is located in the middle of a transverse compartment, allowing outside accessible portions to be used for equipment storage. In the front compartment—and mounted transversely—is a six-bottle, 6,000-psi cascade system, which helps lower the center of gravity, contributing to vehicle handling safety. Aside from filling SCBA bottles, the system can supply air for tools through four ceilingmounted reels with 100 feet of air line each. A total of 14 spare SCBA cylinders are stored on the vehicle.

Five compartments have roll-out trays with 400-lb. capacity, including a rear compartment with an 84-inch-Iong tray and featuring a roll-up door. The top of the body has racks to store a 24foot ladder and a surfboard for water rescue.

The vehicle is mounted on a Navistar Model 2574 chassis and has a wheelbase of about 200 inches. Seating includes two in the cab and three in the module, which is heated and air-conditioned. The truck is powered by a Cummins LTA10, 300-hp, diesel engine and has an Allison Model MT-643 automatic transmission.

Other features include a six-ton front-mounted winch, four 500watt telescoping floodlights, an arrowboard mounted behind the module to direct traffic from the rear, and a 10-inch scotchlite belt mounted around the body at headlight level. This truck will become a dedicated haz-mat unit when all teams are fully trained, according to mechanic Ray Shimizu.
