Open Sky Radios Come to WI Fire Department

The Open Sky digital radio, a product colored with some controversy, is currently being used by firefighters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, according to a recent report from WISN News.

The Milwaukee Fire Department converted to the digital radios on Tuesday to comply with a federal mandate. City firefighters have voiced concerns regarding issues experienced by Milwaukee police officers when they converted to the same system which included communication breakdowns in emergency situations.

The report indicates that as of Tuesday afternoon 473 of the new digital radios are being used by firefighters. In the article, Milwaukee Fire Department Chief Mark Rohlfing was quoted to say, “As we know the Open Sky it’s had a few problems. There’s been some growing pains.”’ Rohlfing continued to say,“Every radio system, it doesn’t matter what it is, you get out of range. We have a lot better capacity, and I believe it will make our firefighters safer in the field.”
