Volunteer Department Wins Quick Attack Pumper
The Lakewood, W. Va., Volunteer Fire Department’s name was drawn from more than 8000 entries in Emergency One Inc.’s free fire apparatus contest that started in January 1977 and ended the following April, with the drawing taking place and the truck given away on the floor of the International Association of Fire Chiefs conference in Denver.
Chief Erskine of the Lakewood Department, who was unable to attend the conference, was absolutely speechless when Emergency One’s director of sales, John Oakley, informed him by phone that his department was the recipient of the bright red rig.
The quick attack rescue pumper is mounted on a Ford F-350 chassis and features an all-aluminum body, 250-gallon booster tank, 250-gpm Hale pump, Hanay electric reel, the latest Federal Twinsonic light bar, an Emergency One siren, hard suction hose, booster hose and nozzle, and an Alcolite ladder.
Lakewood’s department consists of 25 volunteers who protect an area of approximately 6 miles surrounding St. Albans, W. Va.
