■ In Georgia, the Murray County Volunteer Fire Department is operating five of these 1.500-gallon tankers built on a GMC Topkiek chassis by American Fire Apparatus.

According to Chief Gene Darnell, the county is considered very rural in some respects, but facilities such as carpet mills in the jurisdiction justify’ the need for tankers such as these. Each of the five stations also has a pumper carrying 1,000 gallons of water. The fire commissioners also wanted as much money to be spent locally as possible when purchasing the apparatus.

The tanker has cab seating for three and is powered by a Caterpillar 3116, ATAAC diesel engine with Allison standard transmission. It mounts a single-stage Hale, 450-gpm pump (model 40FD8-2) with 4½- and three-inch intakes on each side. Six hundred feet of 2’/-inch hose are carried, and two preconnected 1 ‘/-inch attack lines come off the rear.
