ARRIVAL

Arriving companies approach upwind; first company should recommend initial command post to other arriving units. Identify and communicate a safe response route for other responding units. Take initial control actions, as per haz-mat operational procedures. Building map and building status panel direction and legend located in lobby at fire department building status panel. Emergency response plan located in lock box at north main entrance driveway.

SPECIAL FIRE OR HAZARD PROTECTION FEATURES

Fire alarm panel inside lobby on w est wall. Automatic ventilation shutdown in lab and area D. Manual locations east lab wall (hallway) north area D on wall in hallway. These areas are protected by halon and Dri-Chemical. Building is sprinklered, F.D.C. located on grass between Barrington and parking lot. OS + Y valves located against west wall in area A and in southwest corner of lab.

EVACUATION CONSIDERATIONS

Use DOT Response Guidebook to determine initial evacuation procedures. Downwind areas of smoke should be evacuated.

FIRE EXPOSURES

Areas A-D all have two-hour fire walls with three-hour rollups. Area C contains storage of oxidizers that are incompatible with chemicals in A and B. Tank farm is located at southwest area (inside and out). 1,600gallon liquid nitrogen tank at w?est side (outside). Explosion in the bottling room may subject bulk storage areas to fire. Piping from nitrogen pad leads to area D.

EXPLOSION/BLEVE POTENTIAL

Bottling room is designed to explode through the roof. Literally hundreds of explosion/BLEVE potentials on site; 55-gallon drums, boxed materials throughout areas A-C. All permanent storage tanks are explosion vented.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING LEVELS

Structural firefighters’ protective clothing is not effective with some materials. Consult DOT Guidebook or on-site MSDSs with regard to wearing protective clothing.

CONTAINMENT OF SPILLS

Interior 500to 3,000-gallon and exterior 6.500-gallon tanks have containment dikes; when full, drain into 30,000 gallon underground containment sewer sump at truck ramp.

OTHER INFORMATION

Runoff to sewer may create fire or explosion hazard; fire may produce poisonous gases. Phenol may be fatal if inhaled. Some materials may react violently with water. Drop ceiling must be breached for ventilation under skylight

Two workers were killed and another seriously injured in an explosion Tuesday at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility near the Atlanta airport.
