Illinois Firefighter Dies after Being Pinned Under Fire truck

A Cicero, IL firefighter has died of injuries sustained when he was pinned underneath a fire truck. The firefighter, Lt. Robert Augustyn, 57, suffered multiple fractures. He sustained the injuries after his fire company responded to an automobile accident. When he and his crew arrived on location, an ambulance crew told Augustyn the engine wasn’t needed. Augustyn got out to act as a spotter for the driver of the rig. As some point he either slipped or tripped behind the moving engine. The driver kept backing up not knowing that Augustyn was underneath. Once the crew discovered Augustyn was trapped underneath, it used hydraulic jacks to lift the back of the truck and Augustyn was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center where he underwent surgery.
