>> The CHAMBERSBURG (PA) FIRE DEPARTMENT received the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 2014 Rolf H. Jensen Memorial Public Education Grant, which will support the department’s “The Smoke Alarm is Sounding: Know What to Do” campaign. During a smoke alarm installation program in 2013, the fire department conducted a survey and found that most families did not have a fire escape plan. As part of the campaign, the fire department will present a lesson on fire escape planning to children under 12, their parents, and older adults. The lesson will culminate in a fire drill designed to allow participants to practice what they learned in a controlled environment. www.nfpa.org.
>> LIBERTY MUTUAL INSURANCE announced the winners of its National Firemark Awards as Lieutenant Jake Miller and Captain Adam Ebersole of the Lampeter (PA) Fire Company (for Heroism) and Captain Scott Waldvogel of the San Bruno (CA) Fire Department (for Community Service). The annual awards are presented to U.S. firefighters who best represent their communities and demonstrate the firefighter’s selfless spirit. To celebrate their achievements, Liberty Mutual will award their respective fire departments with a $10,000 grant. A committee comprised of numerous fire safety organizations selected the winners from a pool of more than 150 firefighter nominees. www.libertymutual.com.
>> The COLORADO SPRINGS (CO) FIRE DEPARTMENT launched the RESTART program, designed to help small business owners, realtors, and brokers find code-compliant commercial properties in Colorado Springs prior to purchasing, leasing, or developing the property, thereby avoiding future unexpected and costly upgrades. Services provided include a cursory review of the proposed use against the existing building for potential fire code issues, initial inspection of existing building for current fire code violations, a constant point of contact to help users through the process until occupancy, and a personal connection to other city departments and outside agencies with which they may need to work.
