FDNY Recruit Gets Third Shot at Training Academy

A Fire Department of New York (FDNY) recruit who was unable to complete two fire academies received an $81K-per-year desk job while waiting for another chance to become a New York City firefighter, accoridng to a report.

The New York Post says that Choeurlyne Doirin-Holder, 39, failed an FDNY fire academy class in 2013 and then had to leave a 2015 class due to an injury.

She made $81,376, including overtime, last year–thousands more than in her original position as an EMT. Doirin-Holder gets top firefighter pay because she is one of 282 “priority hires” who Brooklyn federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis ordered must get preference, the report said.

In May, report surfaced that Rebecca Wax was allowed to graduate from the FDNY academy despite not having passed a stringent physical fitness test, and that the FDNY made changes to its entrance exam that diminished its focus on physical fitness standards. Two veteran FDNY trainers were subsequently reassigned from the academy, accoriding to a report.
