Columbia (SC) Fire Department

Response: The Columbia Fire Department has been using automatic nozzles on its preconnect lines for years. The department does have and use other nozzles according to the nature of the incident and prevailing conditions. Most CFD companies still carry smooth-bore nozzles and have been trained in their use. They are used to penetrate deep into high-heat areas and cool intense fires.

Four of our engine companies are currently experimenting with and evaluating low-pressure nozzles. Early reports indicate that they have had good experiences with them. The department is now using primarily automatic nozzles. Firefighters in the CFD are taught when to use a fog and when to use a straight steam when using the automatic nozzle. The training bureau has reinforced the fact that using a fog stream inside an occupied room can be dangerous and can result in serious burns from the steam and the disruption of the thermal balance. The fog stream is used mainly in unoccupied buildings and rooms. When using the automatic nozzle in occupied buildings and rooms, a straight stream is our choice.
