Audio-Visual Program

Basic Skills for the EMT, a 20-unit audiovisual training program that covers all the basic skill areas in the EMT-A course, has been introduced by Emergency Training Inc.

Each unit covers areas that benefit most from audio-visual support. Basic Skills for the EMT is designed to integrate with the EMT-A course, and instructors can use the program for initial training as well as for reinforcement and review.

The audio-visuals are available as either slides or filmstrips, and they come with an audio cassette and instructors’ guide.

Bag-Mask

The Hope II bag-mask has been announced by Aden Safety.

The bag-mask has a bi-directional valve for venting exhalation that can be easily cleaned of aspirated matter. Also, a safety relief valve prevents excessive pressure in the lungs. If the pressure should exceed 40 cm of water columns, the valve automatically vents to atmosphere, relieving the excess pressure.

The bag-mask has a connection for administering oxygen source.

Smoke Generating Devices

Smoke-generating devices for detecting leaks, studying air flow patterns, fire fighting drills, triggering and smoke detectors, are being marketed by the Superior Signal Company.

All devices are compact and remain cool to the touch during the operation. Depending on the specific item used, the burning time is 30 seconds to 5 minutes, and the amount of smoke produced is 4000 to 115,000 cubic feet.

Smoke Detector

Fyrnetics Inc., has introduced the Lifesaver Plus, an ionization-type smoke detector with a 9-volt Ultracell lithium battery. The manufacturer states that the battery contains lithium and a gaseous electrolyte in hermetically sealed cells. Both the Lifesaver Plus smoke detector and the battery have a 10year warranty in normal household usage.

Trailer Pump

Hale Fire Pump Company announces the FB trailer-mounted pump with a capacity of 1000 gpm at 150 psi at a 10-foot lift. Model FB100 is powered by a Ford V-8, 460 cubic-inch gasoline engine, or a Caterpillar 3208 210-hp diesel engine. Eit her engine will meet the NFPA Standard 1901 requirements for 1000-gpm pumps.

The trailer has a welded structural steel frame and can carry 400 feet of 2½ -inch hose and two 10-feet lengths of suction hose.

The FB100 also comes skid-mounted on an 8-inch channel frame and is suitable for airport crash trucks. It can be frame-mounted for rural fire apparatus and can also be used as a stationary industrial fire pump. A 500-gpm model is available with either diesel or gasoline engines.

Electrical System

An electrical system that simplifies maintenance for all models of Duplex fire apparatus chassis was announced by the Duplex Truck Division of the Nolan Company.

The system includes five major wiring harnesses that are number-coded for easy identification. In the cab, there are separate electrical harnesses for standard instruments and accessory items. All standard instruments are plug-in type units and can be serviced from the front of the instrument panel. Other major harnesses in the chassis service the engine and frame components.

Hose Handling System

Fire Research Corporation has developed a hose storage and handling system that eliminates the drudgery of handling hose in the firehouse. One man can load or unload an apparatus hose bed.

The mobile rack holds up to 1800 feet of 2‘ i-inch hose, and is supplied with four casters, two of them locking. The hose handling system can accommodate any size hose from 1 to 6 inches.

Portable Aspirator

Impact Instrumentation, Inc. announces a portable aspirator, Model 302, with rechargeable batteries which provide up to two hours of operation.

External AC or DC operation is obtained by connecting the AC line cord or DC charger cable to a wall outlet, a portable battery or an auto lighter jack.

A suction regulator enables ranging of vacuum from 0 to 510 mm/hg (0 to 20” hg). Dual collection jars feature an overflow shutoff system which prevents aspirated contents from being drawn into the vacuum system.

Automatic Nozzle

Fire Task Force Innovations Inc. introduces the Magnum-Matic, a booster line automatic nozzle with variable flow control.

Intended for use on ¾ or 1-inch booster hose, the controllable flow range is from less than 0 gpm to the maximum that can be pumped through the line. The nozzle weighs 36 ounces and comes with a pistol grip. Depending on line size, length, and pump pressure, the range can approach 100 gpm, a flow formerly expected from a 1 1/2-inch line.

The nozzle features a full cross-fill, high projection, fog pattern, as well as a superwide flush and manual override.

Resuscitation Kit

Mada Medical Products, Inc. introduces its resuscitation kit No. 1331, suitable for emergency squads.

The kit contains two refillable oxygen cylinders, one airway and a bag-mask. It is lightweight and easy to carry.

Purifier Tower

A unit for purifying high pressure air for breathing air cylinders is available from Robbins Aviation Inc.

Designed for use with any high pressure air compressor with a rated operating pressure up to 5000 psi, the Purifier Tower has an automatic drain valve with a timer to maximize the efficiency and service life of the purifier cartridge. The unit is suitable for low-volume users of breathing air.
