RICKY DAVIDSON of Shreveport, Louisiana, was awarded the EMS Leadership Award at the Eighth Annual EMS Management Academy held in Kansas City, Missouri, on October 4, Davidson is an 18-year fire service veteran and chief of emergency medical services for the Shreveport Fire Department. He also serves as the chairman of the EMS section for the International Association of Fire Chiefs. The EMS Leadership Award is sponsored byFitch & Associates and the U.S. Sprint Corporation.

Members of the METRO-DADE FlRE DEPARTMENT’S TACTICAL RESCUE Team-Division chief JOE GARCIA, captain TOM MCKAY, Lt. WILLIAM CONDERMANN. and firefighters/paramedics TONY GARCIA. ALAN PERRY, and RAYMOND BELL—made up one of 30 best teams front the C.S., Canada, Europe, and South Africa that participated in the 9th Annual International Extrication Competition and Learning Symposium in Cortland, New York, this past August. Metro-Dade TRT won first place in the “Unlimited” category, which allowed the introduction of heavy hydraulic equipment

ANTHONY M. EDWARDS, JR., of Brewster, New York, was honored as New York State Fireman of the Year 1992 by the American Legion Department of New York. Edwards, who has served as a volunteer firefighter for seven years, accepted the award on September 27 at the Hudson Valley Firemen’s Home in Hudson, New York. The award relates to the October 20, 1991 rescue of Brewster resident Harvey Robinson.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs has recognized WOLFF, LANG, CHRISTOPHER ARCHITECTS, INC. of the Rancho Cucamonga (CA) Fire Protection District for serving the public with designs for Fire Stations Nos. 4 and 5 in their district. In addition, the 1AFC has recognized RAYMOND CABALLERO, a Chicago (IL) firefighter, with the Benjamin Franklin Fire Service Award for life-saving heroism in the fire service. The award relates to the June 30. 1991, off-duty rescue of an elderly woman who lived next door to Caballero. The PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY (MD) FIRE DEPARTMENT also has been commended, with the IAFC’s Fire Service Award for Excellence, which recognizes innovations and achievements in managing resources to reduce loss of life and property. All three noteworthies received their awards at the IAFC’s annual conference in September in Anaheim.

1992-93 officers were elected at the annual conference of the International Association of Fire Chiefs this past September in Anaheim, California. GARY NICHOLS, chief of the Sedgewick County (KA) Fire District since 1975, was elected president; PHIL McGUOLDRICK, chief of the Cape Elizabeth (ME) Fire Department, was elected first vice president; TOM SIEGFRIED, chief of the Altamonte Springs (FI.) Fire Department since 1972, was elected second vice president; and ROBERT COUNTS, chief of the Troy (OH) Fire Department since 1965, was elected treasurer.

The American Fire Sprinkler Association’s 1992 HenryS. Parmelee Award has been awarded to Fire Chief DAVE HILTON of the Cobb County (GA) Fire Department. Due to Hilton’s pioneering efforts, no multifamily dwellings without sprinklers have been built in Cobb County since 1981. It is estimated that 40 to 50 lives have been saved as a result.

BRIAN MCQUEEN, assistant chief of the Whitesboro (NY) Fire Department, was honored for his outstanding fire prevention activities with the Marc Mueller Fire Prevention Award of Excellence on September 19. The commendation came jointly from the National Volunteer Fire Council and Master Protection Corp. McQueen has developed and implemented fire prevention programs for senior citizens and young people and has secured more than S 100,000 in grant money for fire prevention projects.
